Rutherford O. O. Trefusis cheerfully insists that everyone calls him Root. He is a mechanic on the starship Mumbai. This is his first assignment (after he completed a year‘s training at Starfleet Academy and half a year on assignment at Spacedock in Earth orbit).
Most crewmen join the Academy straight out of school; Root was rather older when he enlisted, and has a slightly mysterious past. Four years ago he presented himself to the authorities in Australia as an undocumented immigrant under the somewhat obscure provisions of the Climate Mitigation Act 2112. After medical examination he was officially recorded as being 21 years old. (So in the comic he has just celebrated is 25th birthday.)
He affects an archaic turn of speech, which he claims is necessary to preserve his English culture.
His address on Earth is a unit in a vertical farm in Zone City in Tasmania.
