Sumita 9 is an engineering chief on the USS Mumbai (not to be confused with chief engineer). She says her name is Sumita 9 because she is the ninth smartest Sumita on Ilyria, her home world.
Sumita coordinates all extra-vehicular activity, including keeping the work bees and shuttles is good order and maintenance of space suits and other equipment. This is important because the Mumbai acts as a mobile workshop for remote star bases.
From her appearances in the strip so far, it appears her main recreation is teasing her colleagues.
