Mrrmr has short hair because he is an engineer, not because he is male.
Caitians are a species who appear only in the Animated Series (unless some background characters in Star Trek IV are intended to be caitians), and only in the person of M’Ress, a communications officer—so a lot of Mrrmr’s appearance is conjecture on my part!
