  Wheel is grabbing something to eat in a rec room that has a viewscreen patched in to the ship’s visual sensors. The reason they aren’t simply looking out of the mess hall windows is that those windows face backwards, so they would not see anything much.

  I have decided fairly arbitrarily that this woman’s name is Sumita 9. This strip is set in the 1960s sf era, so at least one person has to have a number for a surname. Maybe she’s related to Number One.

  MS2601-1957 is not a binary system. What’s happening is that a gas giant is forming, and the energy released by the gas and dust it is abosrbing is released as heat and light.
