The yellow thing is a work bee, one of the models introduced in Star Trek: The Motion Picture. A grey version appears in the Deep Space Nine title sequence.
My original plan was that the rescue and salvage attempt would be made using a mobile work platform I would make up myself. In deciding to swich to the work bee I gave myself the task of representing a ‘real’ (or at least canon) vehicle for the first time. Its curved and sloping sides turned out to be very tricky in Google Sketchup, but hopefully it will serve for my cartooning needs.
The more usual term would be environmental suit or e.v. suit.
