Not the same species as Mrrmr or Ash.
His species have been exploring space for thousands of years before any other known to the Federation (presumably this excludes extinct cultures and those that have sublimed). They do not colonise planets but mostly they live in artificial habitats and keep themselves to themselves, but a few choose to live in the Federation and even join Starfleet.
Very few of his colleagues know or could pronounce his full name.
